Why You DON'T Want a Titanium Nail

Why You DON'T Want a Titanium Nail

When buying a new dab nail, try to avoid titanium (ti) options. We understand the appeal of an indestructible nail, but we recommend quartz nails for dabbing. Quartz heats up quicker than ti, gives better flavor, and won't break your piece.

Most titanium nail options are imported, and no one really knows what kind of metal they are made with. It is possible that they are "titanium coated", but you never know what type of metal is underneath it, after the coating has been torched away. Inhaling vapor from a nail made of unknown materials can be potentially harmful for your health. Ti nails are also prone to giving a metallic flavor to your concentrate.

Another reason for avoiding titanium is the risk of it breaking your rig. When heated, titanium expands quite a bit. If you have a titanium nail inserted into a female joint, it will expand after torching, and most likely break the joint. Watch this quick video of a dab no-no!

Quartz Nails - What Should I Invest In? How Do I Use Them?

Quartz Nails - What Should I Invest In? How Do I Use Them?

Everyone knows that quartz nails are the healthiest, most efficient nails for vaporizing concentrates. Perfect for low temp dabs with amazing flavor! But how do you know what kind to buy? American made, or import?

We get this question all the time! And here's our opinion:

The short answer is, quartz is quartz. If you think you can be responsible and clean your quartz well, then investing in American made quartz is a better option. If you don't plan on taking proper care of your quartz, then import is the way to go. The main difference between American made quartz and China made quartz is a process called "purging". This process clears out any air or gas bubbles trapped inside the quartz. Many import companies cut corners, and skip this process during manufacturing. Because of this skipped step, the stability of the quartz of decreases, and can highly vary from batch to batch. This causes the quartz to be more brittle after torching, and inconsistent cool down times.

    • How to Properly Use Quartz Nails

     - Heating

Using a butane torch, start to heat the quartz from the bottom. Heat evenly, moving the flame in small circular motions. You will know the nail is ready when you start to see little red flecks appear on the quartz. DO NOT heat to the point where the nail is glowing bright red! That's far too hot, and it will hurt your throat and lungs. Always allow a cooling time of 10 - 60 seconds, after torching.

    - Cleaning

When dabbing at low temperatures, you savor the flavor and potency of your concentrates. But you will most likely have a small pool of residue left over, in the nail. If you leave the puddle of residue there, it will very likely burn into your nail the next time you heat it up. Letting residue build up can quickly deteriorate the flavor of your dabs, and the life of your nail. To avoid this, use Q-tips to swab up the extra residue after every dab. Some people even dip their Q-tips in isopropyl alcohol before swabbing their nail to ensure a crisp, clean nail, every time they dab. If the Q-tip method isn't cleaning black build up, it means that you dabbed at a high enough temperature to burn the concentrate onto the nail. Unfortunately, the Q-tip method will not help this issue. Make sure you also have a carb cap when taking low temp dabs, so you don't waste any of your product.

    Nicotine Salts vs Freebase E-Juice

    Nicotine Salts vs Freebase E-Juice

    Nicotine Salt

Nicotine salts occur naturally in tobacco.

Nicotine salt is a much more stable compound than freebase, but less fickle. Salts requires more heat to volatilize to allow it to be inhaled, which is considered to be a less productive delivery system.

Nicotine salts have a much smoother throat hit when compared to freebase nicotine, which allows users to use higher levels of nicotine, without discomfort.

A good example of this is with the e-juice formulated by Juul. Juul uses nicotine salts derived directly from tobacco leaves. Their e-juice nicotine strength is 50mg , but due to the lower voltage of their device and the smoother throat hit of salts, the throat hit won’t feel anything like 50mg. The user will still get a quick and very strong nicotine buzz, without having to constantly pull on the device. Vaping one Juul pod with 50mg nicotine content is the equivalent of one pack of cigarettes.

    Freebase Nicotine

Normally what DIY’ers and e-juice manufacturers use is a free compound version of nicotine, or a freebase.

Freebase sounds bad because it’s often associated with the word “freebase cocaine,” but in this case, freebase only means that it’s in its purest form.

    First a little science…

Nicotine itself is a base and is not very potent in the body until protons are removed. Nicotine absorbs protons which results in the nicotine molecules becoming ions. Ions don’t move across organic membranes very well so they are less likely to affect the body. For nicotine to become potent, it needs to be converted into a “freebase” form.

Freebase nicotine is the form that tobacco companies use and what most e-juice companies use.

If you're interested in trying nicotine salts or freebase e-juice, stop by Up'n Smoke to get a great quality set up with top notch education from our team!

CBD - What is it? How is it beneficial?

CBD - What is it? How is it beneficial?

CannabidiolCBD—is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits, but does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. The fact that CBD-rich cannabis is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains makes it an appealing option for patients looking for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions without disconcerting feelings of lethargy or dysphoria.

Scientific and clinical research—much of it sponsored by the US government—underscores CBD’s potential as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism, MS, chronic pain, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, infections, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders. CBD has demonstrable neuroprotective and neurogenic effects, and its anti-cancer properties are currently being investigated at several academic research centers in the United States and elsewhere. Further evidence suggests that CBD is safe even at high doses.

The brain contains large numbers of highly specialized cells called neurons. Each neuron connects to many others through structures called synapses. These are sites where one neuron communicates to another by releasing chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters.

A neuron’s sensitivity to a specific neurotransmitter depends on whether or not it contains a receptor that “fits” that transmitter, like an electrical socket fits a plug. If a neuron contains receptors that match a particular neurotransmitter, then it can respond directly to that transmitter. Otherwise, it generally can’t. All neurons contain multiple neurotransmitter receptors, allowing them to respond to some neurotransmitters but not others.

Brain receptors are not only sensitive to neurotransmitters produced naturally within the brain, like dopamine or serotonin, but also chemical messengers produced outside the body, such as plant cannabinoids like THC or CBD. So when you ingest an edible or inhale some vapor, you’re allowing compounds originally produced by a plant to enter your body, travel through your bloodstream, and enter your brain. Once they arrive, these plant-derived compounds can influence brain activity by interacting with receptors on neurons. But they don’t interact with all neurons, just the ones that have the appropriate receptors.

We carry a wide variety of CBD products at Up'n Smoke, including: Charlotte's Web tincture oils and topical pain balms, as well as their PAWS tincture line for pets, Rocket CBD capsules and dog treats, Foothills CBD crystalline isolates, VeedVerks CBD pre-filled oil cartridges, SAUC brand CBD vape juice, Homegrown Essentials brand CBD vape juice, and Colorado Hemp Honey CBD infused honey!

All of these companies are based in Colorado, and all of these products are made with Colorado sourced hemp!

    CFL Colors - 101

    CFL Colors - 101

CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) Reactive Glass are glass colors that can shift shades, depending on what kind of lighting it is exposed to. The CFL shift is caused by the glass being infused with Rare Earth Metals.

Each metal has a unique Emission and Absorption of light. The bands of Absorption correlate to wave lengths of different types of light.

The wave length of light emitted then determines what visible color is produced. CFL reactive glass was once very rare, but now that it's gaining hype and popularity, many glass color companies have made multiple different glass colors that can shift.

There are quite a few different CFL shifting colors out there, and as this trend keeps growing, American glass color companies are coming out with more and more rare colors. Some CFL reactive glass can shift to three and sometimes four different shades!

Glass Alchemy is an American glass color company, that makes some very popular CFL colors like:

SERUM: A light champagne color in natural light, and a rosie pink in CFL.

TERPS: A bright orange in natural light, and an electric yellow under CFL.

POTION: A transparent blue in natural light, and a light purple under CFL.

Northstar Glass Company has some fun CFL colors as well:

SIRIUSLY: A teal green in natural light, and a vibrant purple under CFL.

EXPERIMENTAL #32: An amber champagne color in natural light, and a hot pink under CFL.

EXPERIMENTAL #50: A sea green in natural light, and a blue violet in CFL.

EXPERIMENTAL #55: A milky champagne in natural light, and a hot pink under CFL.

    We have!

Or maybe you have tried loading your product into a vaporizer, only to have it all end up in your lap?

That's why NugTools built the ultimate smoker's Swiss Army Knife, The Nuggy! The Nuggy is a made-to-last multi-tool that houses nine gadgets. This little guy fits in the palm of your hand, (or your pocket), and is equipped with lock-in safety features on each tool.

The Nuggy comes in handy in all occasions, and has many different uses!

    • Scrape resin! Use the arrowhead scraper tool to clean pipes and bowls.
    • Grind weed without a fancy grinder! Use the scissor tool to trim big buds and nugs.
    • Slice a cigar! Want to roll a blunt? Use the sharp knife tool to cleanly split open a Swisher.
    • Take a dab! Use the stainless steel spoon tool to take a nice little dab or pack a vape pen.
    • Pack a joint! Use the tamper tool to perfectly pack your joint for even burning.
    • Smoke it 'till it's gone! Use the roach clip tool to hold that last bit of your blunt or joint that just can't be wasted!

    • Find that glob of wax you just dropped! Use the flashlight tool to keep track of product or vaporizer parts.

      Nuggy FAQ's!

      Q: Why no lighter?

A: People ask NugTools all the time why the Nuggy doesn't have a lighter.  And although they did consider it, there's actually a lot of reasons why they left it out.  Here's a few of them.

      1. If lighter fluid was to leak it could potentially be dangerous considering the close proximity of the tools to flames and other extreme heat sources.
      2. Adding a lighter would make the Nuggy less comfortable in your hand and bulkier in your pocket.
      3. Unless it's a torch, lighters are typically disposable.  We lose them all the time.  The Nuggy is in a different category.  It will last a lifetime.

With that said, they are still working on some creative solutions for future versions, so stay tuned!

      Q: Why no grinder?

A: NugTools put a lot of thought into this, but the answer is actually very simple.  Here it is; They only make high quality products.

      Think about it..

A multi-tool should fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.  Not too big and not too heavy, right?

On the other hand, a grinder should not fit in your hand.  In fact, the best grinders are actually pretty big and heavy.

When grinding herb, they think you should use a high quality grinder, not something miniature that fits inside a hand held multi-tool, and definitely not some cheese grader thing that wastes crystals all over the table.

If you don't have a grinder handy, you can always chop up your flower with the scissor.

Q: How much does the Nuggy weigh?

      A: 1/2 Pound

Q:  How is the Nuggy made?

A: The stainless steel tools go through an annealing process to become stronger. The plastic case is sealed through an ultrasonic welding process.

      Q:  Is the Nuggy safe?

A:  All of the tools lock in place when opened and closed. Each tool is equipped with an easy to use lever, so you never have to worry about cutting your fingers.

Q:  What colors does the Nuggy come in?

A:  At the moment, The Nuggy is only available in dark green.

Q:  Where can I buy the Nuggy?

A:  The Nuggy is for sale at and at many great smoke shops across the US & Canada (like Up'n Smoke, Fort Collins! :)).

Q: How long will the batteries last in my Nuggy?

A: The batteries will pump out 8 hours of continuous light.

Q:  Where can I find replacement batteries for my Nuggy?

A: They hope to sell them on their online store at in the near future.  But for now, you can find them at any local hardware store.

Q:  Can I use the bottle opener for anything else other than bottles?

A:  Applying more pressure than the bottle opener is designed to handle will cause the internal spring to break. The tool will still work, it just wont lock into position as well and might seem loose, so be careful.  Opening a bottle is no problem, just don't be silly and try to use it as a can opener or something like that.

Soft Glass v.s. Glass on Glass Pieces

Soft Glass v.s. Glass on Glass Pieces

Hard glass or glass on glass refers to borosilicate glass. This glass contains silica, (the dioxide form of silicon), and boron trioxide as the forming agents. These factors make borosilicate glass more resistant to heat; making it harder.  Borosilicate glass is the best medium to use for glass sculpting and blowing. Hard glass pieces can also be used as dab rigs, but soft glass can not.

Soft glass refers to soda-lime glass. The three main physical properties of this glass, (sodium carbonate, lime, and silica), make it extremely workable; making it soft. Soda-lime glass is easily softened and remelted by heat. This is the kind of glass used to make bottles and jars. Soft glass pieces can not be used as dab rigs; the material can not take the heat. You can identify a soft glass piece by the rubber gromets it has on the bowl and downstem, as you can see below.

But in some cases, soft glass pieces can have a glass on glass downstem, which can handle the heat of a nail.

What Is Dabbing and How Do Dabs Work?

What Is Dabbing and How Do Dabs Work?

If you're at all involved with the cannabis community, then you have probably heard about or know of "dabbing". Smoking concentrates, or "dabs", as a form of marijuana consumption has been around for about a decade; but with the coming of more advanced extraction processes, dabbing concentrates has taken off!

A dab usually refers to a dose of concentrate that is placed on a hot surface, usually a nail, and inhaled through a dab rig. We'll go more in depth with these terms, later on.

What are dabs? How are they made?

Dabs are concentrated doses of cannabis that are made by extracting THC and other cannabinoids using a solvent, like butane or carbon dioxide, resulting in sticky oils commonly referred to as wax, shatter, budder, or butane hash oil (BHO). While it's possible to extract the non-psychoactive compounds of the marijuana, like CBD, it's the THC that is behind the potent effects of dabs; making them the fastest and most efficient way to get medicated.

        • 710: Most know that 4:20 is the universal toking time. Dabbers claimed 7:10, because when you flip it upside down, you get OIL.
        • BHO: Butane Hash Oil, this concentrate is made by shooting butane gas through cannabis then purging out the butane.
        • Bubble Hash: This is a specific kind of hash that will bubble when smoked.
        • Budder: An extract which is made into a creamy butter like texture.
        • Carb Caps: Carb caps are used to cover the nail of a dab rig so no smoke gets away after a dab. Carb caps decrease your airflow and help "milk" your hit and get the most out of your dab. You can then take the cap off to clear out the rest of the smoke from your dab rig.
        • Concentrates:  Any kind of cannabis plant material which is extracted. Some examples include hash, bubble hash, oil, wax, shatter and a few more.
        • Dab:  Putting concentrate onto a dab tool to be smoked using dab rigs. Literally you put extract on a wand and spread the concentrates around on a hot nail.
        • Dab Tool:  A wand or stick used to hold the extract around a dab rigs nail. Can be made of glass, stainless steel, or titanium.
        • Dab Rig:  A water pipe used to smoke concentrates. The bowl is replaced with a nail and dome or a domeless nail where you place the concentrates.
        • Dome:  This piece is part of the dab rig's components. The dome is placed over a  nail which is connected to the dab rig's joint. Domes keep the smoke from spreading outside of the nail. The more smoke, the better the hit! Domes however are somewhat out-dated. Domeless nails are considered far easier to use and more effective.
        • Domeless Nail:  Specific types of nails which capture and save smoke by having a bucket-like shape. Typically made of quartz, titanium or ceramic. Quartz nails tend to be the favorite among the 3. Be wary of "titanium" nails, they are often only coated in titanium which burns off after normal use revealing unknown metals.
        • Glob: Taking an extra large dab! (You know you wanna!)
        • Melt:  Special kind of hash that will dissolve down to nothing when smoked and not leave any leftovers on your nail.
        • Nail: A glass piece that literally looks like a nail that you hammer, that is used to smoke concentrates by placing the nail into the joint of your dab rig. Nails are most commonly made of ceramic, titanium, or quartz.
        • Reclaim:  Extra oil which builds up inside your dab rig after smoking. The reclaim is like a resin which can be smoked by gently heating the glass with a torch. (They make special reclaim catcher attachments which can connect to your oil rig.)
        • Shatter: This is BHO which literally shatters when you remove it from your dish dabber.
        • Torch: A blowtorch used for heating up your nail for a certain amount of time, depending on your preference.
          How do you dab?

Now that you know most of the terms, here's what you'll need to get started:

          1. A dab rig
          2.  A torch
          3. Concentrate
          4.  A dab tool
          5.  A carb cap
Once you've collected your materials, you can get started! First, select the dab size you would like onto your dab tool. Great, now torch your nail which you have attached to your dab rig until you start to see it get RED HOT. Once you see the nail is RED HOT, let it cool for 20-30 seconds. If you're holding your hand two inches from the nail, and it's BURNING your hand, it might be too hot! REMINDER: Do not touch the nail after you torch it! You DO NOT need to pull the nail, like you would with a bowl, to clear your hit! Use a CARB CAP! When your nail has cooled off for a few seconds, use your dab tool to transfer your concentrate onto the nail. Then top it off with your carb cap to get a nice, milky hit! Congrats, my friend, you know how to dab!

Getting to Know E-juice: PG v. VG

Getting to Know E-juice: PG v. VG

When it comes to e-juice, there is always one question that is asked constantly: "What is the difference between PG and VG?" And that is a great question! The liquids work in different ways, and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot of things that go into vaping, and it can all seem a bit confusing to a newcomer. We're hoping this little guide will help you understand everything there is about PG and VG, and assist in improving your vaping experience!

            What Are PG and VG?

PG and VG are odorless liquids that are combined with flavor and nicotine to create e-juice. These liquids produce a vapor when heated, which allow them to be inhaled. The two fluids have different consistencies to each other, and they each have a distinct mouth and throat feel, along with tastes. Most e-juice options on the market use a combination of the two liquids, though the ratio varies from juice to juice. Now let's look into each component, individually.

            Propylene Glycol (PG)

Propylene Glycol is a petroleum by-product that has no color or odor. In vaping, it is used to provide a "throat hit", which users claim is comparable to the "bite" you get from smoking tobacco. It also holds flavor more completely than VG, meaning that it's more commonly used for flavor concentrates and nicotine.

            How Is It Used?

Propylene Glycol is found in many household items including:

            • Asthma inhalers
            • Pet food
            • Oral and topical medical products
            • Makeup, shampoo, and baby wipes

            Is It Safe?

Studies show that PG is safe to ingest orally, and the FDA has deemed it "generally recognized as safe" to be used as a food additive. Some people find high PG juices to be irritating to the throat, but allergies to PG are rare. If you find yourself with a rash or sore throat after using a high PG juice, you might want to consider using a 100% VG e-liquid. The most common side effects of vaping a high PG e-juice consist of dry mouth, sore throat, and increased thirst.

            Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Vegetable Glycerin is a natural chemical derived from vegetable oil. It is used in e-juice to create a "thick" sensation to your vapor. It has a slightly sweet taste, and is considerably thicker than PG. A hit from a high VG e-liquid is noticeably smoother than a hit from a high PG e-juice.

            How Is It Used?

Vegetable Glycerin is found in many things, including:

            • Sugar alternative
            • Soap and hand cream
            • Pet food
            • Toothpaste, mousse, and bubble bath

            Is It Safe?

The FDA has classified VG as “generally recognized as safe” and it is widely recognized as one of the most benign substances known to man. The risk of being allergic to VG is very low, but could cause problems for those allergic to other oils such as coconut or palm.

            What Ratio Should I Use?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all ratio of PG and VG. It depends on the kind of vaping experience you prefer. Many people use various levels of PG and VG for different purposes:

            • Throat Hit – If you enjoy a sharp throat hit when vaping then you’ll prefer a high PG e-liquid. The ‘bite’ at the back of the throat is something many ex-smokers chase, and PG (along with the nicotine) provides more of this than VG. PG carries flavor marginally better than VG, so the flavor will be slightly improved with a high PG e-liquid.
            • Smoothness – High VG fluid tends to give a much smoother feeling on the throat, with a more substantial and ‘thicker’ mouthfeel. The flavor is slightly muted in VG fluids, but this can be countered by using more power to produce more vapor. Be careful to stay within the voltage/wattage limits of your atomizer, or you risk dry hits, or even damaging your equipment.
            • Stealth Vaping – If you want to keep your vaping lowkey in public then high PG is the way to go. Less vapor is produced when exhaled, making this ideal for the less boastful vaping enthusiast. However, you should always apply common sense. Vaping in certain places, such as waiting rooms and on public transport, is often outlawed and is simply bad manners. As vaping is relatively new, we have a duty to be aware of public opinion and behave responsibly.
            • Cloudchasing – A growing trend in vaping circles is ‘cloudchasing‘. This simply involves exhaling dense clouds of vapor, the thicker the better! There are even competitive events based around this activity, where the person producing the biggest clouds wins. If this appeals then high VG is the only option – the higher the better.

Have you ever wondered how a "flip-disc" is made?

Have you ever wondered how a "flip-disc" is made?

Dan Barto, the creator of this beautiful work of art, is a local Fort Collins glassblower specializing in heady complex glass work. Dan is well known for his beautiful "flip discs," also referred to as "filachellos," which you can see in the patterned disc at the base of the piece. This disc's are very characteristic of Dan's work and you will find some sort of variation of these disc's in almost all of his work. So... How are they made?

Well, these beautiful patterned discs are created by first drawing a pattern with a thin stick of glass on one side of the disc. Once that is created, the artist goes back and fills in all the individual spaces with color, much like you would if you coloring in a coloring book. After the design has been created, it is melted into the clear glass and the disc is flipped over so the design is encased in the clear glass and it gives it a very classy, glassy, finished look. This type of glass work can be very tedious to create. Sometimes these can take up to 5 or 6 hours to create a single disc like the one pictured above!

              How cool is that?! :D

              Vaping and Vaporizers 101

              Vaping and Vaporizers 101

Who wants to learn a little bit about Vaporizers?

With the recent increase of vaporizer use, there are tons and tons of new vaporizers and pens and e-cigarettes hitting the market! These wonderful devices can be used to smoke or 'vaporize' many different substances including, but are not limited to,  Marijuana, Tobacco, Concentrates and E-juice. In this post you'll get acquainted with what they are and some of the Jargon that 'vapers' make use.

You know... terms like CBD, THC, atomizer, tank, RDA, 18650, chamber, and 'dope build bro!'... Now you no longer have to be left in the dark while your friends practically speak a different language!

Lets start with Marijuana Vaporizers - Also referred to as "Dry-Herb Vaporizers." These Vaporizers are also compatible with Tobacco and many other substances. Some of my favorites that we carry at the shop are The Pax 2, The Vapir Rise 2.0, The Davinci Ascent and The Original Davinci.

Here's so Vocabulary terms that may be helpful:

Vaping- the slang term for using a vaporizer.
CBD, or Cannabidiol - the non-psychoactive compound in weed. CBD is believed to have many potential medical applications! Treating epilepsy and schizophrenia are two illness among many that CBD is used to treat.
THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol - the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects. THC attaches to receptors in the brain and activates them. This is what affects a person's memory, pleasure, movements, thinking, concentration, coordination, and perception of time.
Edibles - Snacks and Foods with activated THC (weed) in them!
Chamber - The area on a vaporizer that you fill with your Weed.

How do they Work? - Vaporizers are a very healthy alternative to smoking, and reduce your intake of toxins greatly. True vaporization uses a convection method to heat up the plant and activate the the THC and CBD compound. What happens when you vaporize your weed and expose it to heat is the CBD-A and THC-A in your weed are effectively turned into CBD and THC. This is the stuff that gets you stoned and feelin' good! The chamber on the vaporizer works much like a conventional oven. The Herb is heated to an optimal temperature of 350 - 420 to activate the THC and produce a light vapor without burning the herb. Most people tend to stick to the lower end of that scale and vape around the 350-375 range. This process completely eliminates smoke and burned plant matter. Instead you will be left with your weed a slightly browned. Many even reuse their vaped weed in many creative ways like making edibles!

Be informed when purchasing a Dry-Herb Vaporizer. Many have a coil inside the heating chamber. Although they work just fine as a method of smoking your weed, they won't vape your weed! They will burn it and turn it to ashes! These types of pens tend to work better with concentrates which we will get in to next.

Lets move on to Concentrate Vaporizers - Also referred to as 'Wax Pens', or 'Concentrate Pens'

Here's so more vocabulary so you better Concentrate!
Concentrate - also referred to as "dabs", "wax", and "shatter." These substances are various forms of concentrated cannabis extracts that get you really high really fast.
Atomizer - Often referred to as a heater coil. This is the piece in your pen that heats up and combusts the concentrates.

There are tons of different wax pens out there and many of them use all different coils. Try out some different ones and see what you like the most! Some of my  favorites are the Ceramic Donut and the Dual Quartz atomizers. We have tons of great pens at the shop that feature all different types of atomizers. Swing by anytime if you want to check them out!

The last type of vaporizer that I'll explain in this post are E-Cigarettes, more commonly referred to as Vapes or Mods. Here's a fun and informative diagram that I found to help! Help Us Build a Review Community at

              Glass Connoisseur Terminology

              Glass Connoisseur Terminology

Remember the days when you'd simply smoke out of a glass pipe?

Well, those days are over and it can be overwhelming learning about all the new technologies and terminologies.

From ash catchers to Zong's we got you covered on all the info you need!

Adapter-  If you have a bong that you love but can't find the right size bowl to fit, then an adapter is what you need! Adapters can also be used to convert a female joint to a male joint.

Adapter at Up N Smoke headshop in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Ashcatcher/AC - An attatchment for a bong that slides into the diffuser containing another water pool and downstem to catch the ashes. Keeps a real smokers pipe clean for longer by never letting the ashes touch the tube.

Atomizer- The heating element in a vaporizer used to make liquids, concentrates, and/or dry herb into vapor to be inhaled.

Bell (Curve) - An upside down bowl almost. Used in bongs with a Ti Pad or when taking knife hits. Attach the Ti pad to the bell curve or hold the knives under the bell and inhale like you would a normal hit.

Here a video of a bell curve in action:

Bent Neck/BN - refers to the angling of either a bowl, down stem, diffuser or mouthpiece of a tube.

Bistabil - refers to a joint that is made 52% thicker than the standard joint. This is where the down stem slides into the tube. A standard joint is 1.8mm, while Bistabil is 2.8mm. The next step up is Uber, 4.0mm thick

Image is: Heavy Wall Female 19/26 Bistabil Joint 125mm Overall Length

Bore - The diameter of the tube on a bong normally measured in mm. How thick the glass is. The most common are 14mm and 18mm. Here is a picture for size comparison.

Bulge - If a bong has a percolator, it may have thicker glass or a wider diameter than the rest of the bong. This section is referred to as a Bulge.

Bushing diffuser -  Reduces the normal joint size to a smaller one. A bushing diffuser is typically 18mm to 14mm, 18 being the male joint, which slides into the pipe and the 14 being the female joint. Can be used to lower the bowl away from your face.

Button Bowl - A gong slide with 4 holes on the bottom instead of one; designed by Dr. Gadget of TCT. A button bowl is like having a glass screen built right into your bowl.

Bubbler - If a bong and a bowl had a baby it would be a bubbler. Bubblers have a bowl, down stem, water chamber and mouth piece all in one piece of glass.

Carb - A hole on a piece that is covered during inhalation, but is uncovered to clear the chamber of smoke.

Carb Cap- Once you place your dab on a nail and start inhaling, you can place a carb cap on top of your nail to restrict the airflow into the rig through just the small contact area between the carb cap and the edge of the nail. Carb cap gives you thicker, better tasting smoke.

Carb cap at the headshop Up N Smoke in Fort Collins, Colorado

Carbon Filter - Small piece of glass placed between the slide and down stem containing a sphere that is filled with carbon rock used to filter the smoke even farther.

Cash(ed) - When you've smoked all the green and there is only ashes left.

Diffuser: The principle of diffusion in when a single volume of gas passes through a liquid as multiple smaller volumes. The combined surface area of the small bubbles is greater then that of the un-diffused air if it were expressed directly to the water from an outlet the size of the induction port. The greater surface area of any gas bubble traveling through a liquid promotes higher rates of exchange.

Disc Diffuser - A type of diffuser mostly used in stemless tubes but becoming more popular. A disc covered with water, and as you inhale, the smoke is forced through the holes/slits pierced in the disks, thus diffusing the smoke.

Double - Slang term referring to tubes with two chambers.

Down-Stem- The glass tube between the bowl and the bong. Some bongs have fixed down stems (Can't take them out) and others have no down stem. There are many different styles of down stems like regular slit down stem, gritted down stem, showerhead down stem, 6 arm-8arm down stem, etc. The cuts in the down stems (no matter the type) is where the bubbles come from. More cuts/slits = smoother hit.

Drop-Down- Drop downs are a great attachment to keep the bowl further from the bong. Drop downs can protect your rig from the extreme heats it will face from nails. We often hear of customers accidentally hitting their rig with the torch but if you have a drop-down then you might hit the drop down instead which is a much less expensive replacement! Plus, they look cool and add some pizzazz to your rig!

Flame Polished - The process of cutting a logo or image onto a glass piece. It gets it's name because originally when the piece is removed, the area on the glass is rough and is then "polished" with a flame to make it clear

Glass on Glass/GonG -Standard water pipes (bongs) use a glass slide and a rubber stopper to seal off the chamber, but GonG is a more advanced system that involves precision laser glass cutting so the GonG pieces fit perfectly together, creating a more efficient means of smoking. GonG is also a way to "add on" to your bong, including ashcatchers, filters, diffusers, pretty much anything that is compatible.Typically measured in 14mm or 18mm, which refers to the joint diameter (alternatively, 14.4 or 18.8) Glass on glass joints provide a superior seal to rubber grommets.

              Health Stone:

Health stones are great for people who are new to concentrates because you hit it the same way you'd hit a flower pipe. Put your concentrates on the carbon filter and use a mini torch to heat slightly above the concentrate. A Healthstone is completely inert, meaning it won’t produce any smoke or vapors themselves. The dab absorbs into the stone, then vaporizes out once it gets hot enough.
